Google SideWiki Blocker Has Webmasters Outranged Block SideWiki Is The Answer

Google has released sidewiki which is supposed to be used as a platform to post comments related to the websites that the google toolbar user is using. Sidewiki which is a add-on for fire fox and internet explorer browsers has caused many to run the other way from google.

Although sidewiki was created with good intentions, we live in a world where not everybody is honest and some live to ruin others lives. This is one huge mistake google left out when they had discussions on creating such an application.

There has been many that have been building blogs and making blog post about this new tool and just how evil it really is. The facts are many can and already have posted bad comments on others sites for the sole purpose to tarnish that sites reputation.

This is not the only problem though because it can get a great deal worse than just someone posting a bad comment. There are so many things that can be done to not only hurt the site in question but actually hurt the sites owners. Competition can start posting links in sdewiki on your websites leading your visitors away. Spammers can start posting affiliate links left and right and they will show in sidewiki beside your website.

What happens when you have a family website and someone starts posting adult ads and links showing along side your website ? The problem here is that you have no control over these comments and you can not remove them. Sure there is a report link but let’s face facts, there is no way for google to be able to handle millions of reports everyday. This is also assuming you know where to find the links because sidewiki does not work per website or domain name but actually works per page.

Can you honestly monitor 1,000’s of pages if you have a large website or a large blog ? Where are you going to find the time to even monitor all these pages and report the comments ? Then if you do actually be able to monitor and report them, there is no promise google will remove them.

You see there are so many ways this tool can be used for evil that it has outraged many webmasters and you should be outraged right now also. Google is taking over your website and forcing you to have comments on your site, like it or not.

Some have tried to create a solution using javascript to block comments from being seen but as a website developer of over 15 years I can tell you know those solutions do not stop comments from being seen. I have seen these solutions and they are nothing more then free open source code pulled from websites that have snippets of javascript.

Local SEO Tips for Small Businesses

Let’s face it; the average business owner has neither the time nor the inclination to learn the nuances of search engine optimization. When I was first introduced to the concept of search marketing, I spent endless hours researching forums and blog trying to separate the signal from the noise. There’s no shortage of information and advice for business owners out there in theinterwebz , but finding trustworthy and reliable sources is another monster entirely. I would estimate that I invested hundreds of hours researching reliable sources ofSEO and SEM information, and I am thrilled to this day when I discover new ones. This can be a daunting prospect for a small business owner, regardless of their current level of marketing knowledge. I know when I was trying to grow my first small business, I barely had time to eat and sleep…much less surf the web for hours on end.

The real key to local search visibility is to recognize that your location is your brand. In most cases, searches with local intent rarely reflect brand terms. In the research I have seen, most local searches are industry and/or service based with geographic qualifiers. For example, “boston emergency plumber” or “san diego pediatric dentist” are more likely to be searched for than “city name + your business name”. If people are searching for your business by name, that’s great! You’ve done a great job establishing your brand! But if your sole focus is on brand promotion, you are missing out on some great opportunities to develop relationships with new customers in your area. Recent research has shown that almost 40% of allinternet searches are local in intent. If you want to maintain a lead over your competition, now is the time to take action. The following short-list of actionable items will help get you started:

1. Get listed at all of the major local search engines and telecom directories. Start with Google Local and Yahoo Local. There are also services such as UniversalBusinessListing.org which facilitate your submissions to such sites for a minor fee. If you don’t have the time to manually submit your listings, this is an excellent option.

2. Get links from related local sites, industry associations, and the chamber of commerce. One thing to keep in mind is the importance of anchor text; the clickable words that link to your website. Ask your business partners to link to your website using the phrase you want to rank for as anchor text (ie. “boston emergency plumber”, if you are a plumber in Boston). You could even incentivize your suppliers to link to you in exchange for a discount, as the value of the links gained will far outweigh the short-term costs of discounting.

3. Get reviews from customers and/or suppliers. If you go to Google and do a search for “your industry +reviews”, you should come up with a decent list of sites that contain reviews of businesses like yours. Naturally, some industries are more popular than others. If you don’t find one related to your industry, consider it an opportunity and start your own review site ;) To continue with the discount idea noted above, why not give your customers a discount for a favorable review? Note that businesses can be given reviews directly on Google Local, but you also want your reviews to appear on reputable third party sites like Yelp.com (for restaurants), TripAdvisor.com (for hotels, etc.) or RateItAll.com (for general consumer products).

4. Consider the impact of universal search. Universal search refers to the use of non-traditional media in standard search results. Search engines generally serve up hypertext search results. With the introduction of universal search, Google now serves up video, photos, news, etc. in addition to hypertext. Get your geeky nephew to help you produce a video for Youtube. Take some funny photos of the hijinks in your office and upload them to Flickr. Ask one of your industry bloggers if you can contribute an article to their site. Submit a press release. Write an article like this and syndicate it. The opportunities are endless, if you are motivated.

Iphoto to Mobile Me

iPhoto to Mobile Me

If you have a Mac at home, an iPhone, and a PC at the office, MobileMe can get them all in sync using push technology. Update one of them and the other two are updated automatically. You can also use the service to share photos and movies stored in your iPhoto library.

Sharing Movies and Photos

After selecting the photos you wish to share, go the “Share” menu. Click “MobileMe” to bring down a window presenting some options. One of these is your choice of who you wish to have access to your photos. You can set a username and password for your photo gallery if you do not wish it to be open to the public. However, if you would rather have it open to “Everyone,” no password is necessary. If you have previously created a username and password, these will appear in the list of options.

You have to decide if you want others to be able to download your photos, and if you want them to be able to upload theirs to your gallery. If you decide in the affirmative, click on the appropriate checkboxes beside these options. Note that MobileMe allows two ways whereby others can upload photos to your gallery. One is through a webpage, and the other is through a unique email address that may or may not be displayed on your gallery screen.

If you chose to display the email address, everybody can send photos, including unwanted ones, to your gallery. It is for this reason that you are given the option of hiding the email address once you enable uploading through email.

Click “Publish” to send your photos to a gallery. A drop down window will inform you when the gallery is ready, and will ask you if you want to view it, or to “Tell a friend”. If you choose the latter, MobileMe will prepare an email, which you can edit or reword if your want, informing your friend about your gallery.

An “Advanced” button will allow you to hide your gallery on the MobileMe gallery homepage. This way, only those you give the website address to will be able to view it. Finally, if downloads are allowed, you can also determine their quality.
